Lawmakers comments on Ahmadinejads letter to Obama
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN Some Majlis representatives in separate interviews with the Mehr News Agency have expressed their views on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejads letter to U.S. President-elect Barack Obama. In his letter President Ahmadinejad congratulated Obamas victory in the U.S. presidential elections.

In the message sent on Thursday, Ahmadinejad said that it is expected that fundamental and clear changes will be made in Washingtons foreign and domestic policies, as demanded by all nations and the American people.

Member of the Majlis Presiding Board Hamid-Reza Haji-Babayi interpreted Ahmadinejads letter to Obama as a sign of Irans active diplomacy.

Sending the letter was a positive move by the president and was in line with the interests of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Haji-Babayi noted.

The Islamic Republic of Iran not only has announced its position on the election of the new president of the United States it has also seized the initiative from the United States.

Haji-Babayi also stated the letter is going to be reviewed in the Majlis because of the sensitive nature of Tehran-Washington relations.

The Majlis is especially sensitive on the issue and will review the subject in the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.

---------- Letter shows Irans good will

Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee deputy chairman Esmaeil Kosari stated that Ahmadinejads letter showed Irans good will in its foreign policy.

The letter once again proved that Tehran has never intended to deal with other countries out of an aggressive approach, he said.

On the speculations over the possible answers of Obama to the letter, Kosari noted, The policies of the United States will not change with a change of individuals.

----------- Sending letter an acceptable attempt

MP Hamid-Reza Rasayi called the letter an acceptable attempt and in keeping with the national interests of the country.

As the content of the letter has been composed from the position of power and it has explicitly challenged the position of the United States in foreign policy, I think we should evaluate sending a letter by President Ahmadinejad as a preemptive attempt.

In a reference to Irans nuclear program, he said despite an intensive external pressure on Tehran to freeze its uranium enrichment program, Iran succeeded to convince the world public opinion of the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities and the letter is in line with this policy.

-------------- Forethought expected in writing letter

MP Mahdi Sanayi argued if the letter was written based on a forethought it would bring about no harm to the nation.

The MP went on to say the actual result of the letter can be assessed after Obama gives an answer to it.

---------- President should have considered all aspects

A member of the Majlis Cultural Affairs Committee, Bijan Nobaveh, expressed hope that Ahmadinejad would have considered various aspects of his move.

Surely, the president closely considers every attempt he is going to make and, We hope the same is true in this case.

On the probable changes in the U.S. foreign policy, Nobaveh added it is the system which determines the U.S. policies and not the individuals

Obama openness may help IAEA with Iran: ElBaradei

PRAGUE (Reuters) The head of the UN nuclear watchdog said on Tuesday U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's stated readiness for dialogue with Iran without preconditions could make Tehran more forthcoming with his agency, the IAEA.

""If there is a direct dialogue between the United States and Iran, I think Iran will be more forthcoming with the agency,"" IAEA Director Mohamed ElBaradei said.

""(A) political opening will also convince Iran to work with us to solve remaining technical issues,"" he told a news conference in Prague after meeting Czech Foreign Affairs Minister Karel Schwarzenberg.

""That political component of the (Iran) issue requires in my view a direct dialogue with Iran and that's why I am very encouraged by President-elect Obama's statement that he is ready to engage Iran in a direct dialogue without preconditions.

""I have a lot of hope if that is a new policy,"" said ElBaradei, who has argued against isolating Iran and in favor of a broader deal between it and the United States addressing security and trade issues he sees as underpinning the dispute.

Iran has rejected UN Security Council resolutions demanding it halt enrichment work. The Council has imposed three sets of limited sanctions on Iran.

Obama had said he wanted tougher UN sanctions on Iran if it kept defying the Council but, unlike outgoing President George W. Bush, has said dialogue without preconditions with foes was just as important to resolving the stand-off.

Iranian officials have said Obama's victory showed Americans wanted a fundamental change from the policies of Bush, who labeled Iran part of an ""axis of evil.""

""I think right now we have a stalemate in the Iranian situation,"" he said.

""We are able to verify all their declared activities, we are able to verify their enrichment program, which is a good thing. But we are still not able to move forward on clarifying some of the outstanding issues related to alleged studies that could have some linkage to a possible military dimension.""

Iran says its nuclear plans are to make electricity so it can export more oil and gas.

""There is a lot of concern about Iran, not today but about Iran in future... whether once they develop the technology, what are they going to use it for, whether they will go for nuclear weapons,"" said ElBaradei.

""That is the concern shared by the Security Council.""

Salam Petang...

Keistimewaan Orang Melayu:
1) Agama Islam merupakan agama persekutuan.
2) Bahasa Melayu sebagai bahasa persekutuan
3) Hak keistimewaan orang Melayu:
- pendidikan
- ekonomi
- biasiswa
- dll
4) Kedaulatan raja-raja Melayu.

Keistimewaan Orang Cina dan India:
1) mendapat kerakyatan Malaysia.

(bahasa lain bebas digunakan)
3) Hak keistimewaan orang Melayu:
